Life in the Body of Christ: The “One Anothers” of the New Testament

Introduction

Salvation is an individual experience. God, who has foreknown and predestined each of His elect since before the foundation of the world, uses His Word to regenerate a heart, implant faith, and produce repentance. As a result of this work of God in the heart, the person then believes on and receives Christ – and on the basis of that faith, is justified. The Holy Spirit then comes and lives within the individual, beginning the process of sanctification and guaranteeing a full future glory. One person at a time, the Lord accomplishes this saving work.

And yet, salvation is also very much a corporate experience – because the moment a person believes, they are baptized by the Holy Spirit into the Body of Christ. This baptism joins them inseparably to Christ, yes – but it also joins them to all other believers in a mysterious spiritual union as the one Bride of Christ. We then walk through this world and the process of sanctification together, sharing “one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” (Ephesians 4:4)

In this study we will examine the foundation of our Christian relationships with one another, which is this fundamental spiritual unity that defines the Body to which we belong. We will then review the call to love, which is the most notable (and exclusive) characteristic defining Christian relationships. Then will come an extensive section focused on how our Christian relationships should look “where the rubber meets the road” – what it means to bear with one another, edify one another, stir one another up, and so on. And lastly, we will look at our future together, which will be an eternity with the Lord, delighting in both our individual and corporate salvation.
